STORY
The Alpina Roadster V8, a reworked BMW Z8, is among the rarest and most collectible cars the marque ever built. Between June 2002 and October 2003 Alpina produced just 555 examples, roughly 450 of them for the United States, sold for the first time directly through BMW dealerships.
Alpina replaced the Z8's high-revving S62 with its own smoother 4.8-litre V8 (Alpina code F5), tuned for effortless torque: 381 PS and 520 Nm, paired not with a manual but a five-speed Steptronic automatic to suit the car's relaxed grand-touring character. It reached 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds with a 260 km/h limited top speed, and swapped the Z8's 18-inch run-flats for classic 20-inch Alpina wheels.
Where the standard Z8 was a stiff-riding retro sports car, the Alpina Roadster reinterpreted it as a boulevard cruiser, softer and more usable, and today more sought-after than the car it was based on.
