Hornet

1970 – 1977

The Hornet was AMC's compact car introduced for the 1970 model year to replace the Rambler American. It used AMC's 232 and later 258 straight-six engines and was offered as a sedan, hatchback, and Sportabout wagon. The rugged Hornet platform underpinned the Gremlin, Concord, Spirit, and the four-wheel-drive Eagle. In 1978 the Hornet was restyled and renamed the Concord.

The Story

Why the Hornet matters

The Hornet replaced the Rambler American for the 1970 model year and was built until 1977. It was sold as a sedan, as a Sportabout wagon from 1971 and as a hatchback from 1973. Engines were the 199, 232 and 258 cu in sixes and V8s of 304 and 360 cu in. The SC/360 of 1971 was a muscle-car version with the 360 cu in V8. For 1978 AMC restyled the car and renamed it Concord.
