Matador

1971 – 1978

The Matador was an AMC car built from 1971 to 1978, mid-size at first and full-size from 1974, offered as a sedan, wagon, and a dramatically styled coupe from 1974. The Matador Coupe, shaped by designer Dick Teague, could be ordered with 360 and 401 V8 engines. AMC campaigned the Matador in NASCAR with Penske Racing and drivers Mark Donohue and Bobby Allison, scoring several wins. It was AMC's largest car after the Ambassador was discontinued.

The Story

Why the Matador matters

The Matador was built from 1971 to 1978 and took over the mid-size role from the Rebel. The first generation was offered as a hardtop, a sedan and a wagon, and the 1971 hardtop could be ordered with the Machine Go option. From 1974 the Matador moved to a larger platform, and AMC sold a new fastback coupe styled under Dick Teague. Factory-backed Matadors raced in NASCAR from 1972 to 1975, with Mark Donohue and Bobby Allison among the drivers.
