Pacer

1975 – 1980

The Pacer was a compact car launched in 1975, famous for its unusually wide body and vast glass area that earned it the nickname 'the fishbowl.' It was designed around a cab-forward, rounded aerodynamic shape. Powered by AMC straight-six engines and later a 304 V8, it emphasized interior width and visibility. Its quirky styling later made it a pop-culture favorite.

The Story

Why the Pacer matters

AMC introduced the Pacer for 1975 and built it until 1980. The body was unusually wide for a compact, with a large glass area that gave it the nickname 'the fishbowl'. It came as a hatchback coupe, with a wagon added for 1977. The standard engine was the 232 cu in six, with a 258 cu in six optional, and a 304 cu in V8 became available for 1978.
