The Spirit replaced the Gremlin for 1979 and was built until 1983. It kept the Gremlin floorpan under a restyled body, as a liftback and a two-door sedan. Engines were a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, later replaced by a 2.5-litre four, and AMC sixes of 232 and 258 cu in. A 304 cu in V8 was offered only in 1979, on the liftback.
The Spirit replaced the Gremlin for 1979 as AMC's subcompact, offered as a sporty liftback and a notchback sedan. It carried over the Gremlin's platform with more modern, rounded styling. The performance Spirit AMX used the 304 V8 and sport suspension to give the small car sporty performance. Production continued through 1983.
