STORY

Launched at the 1958 London Motor Show, the DB4 was a clean-sheet Aston Martin and the first built at the new Newport Pagnell works. It introduced Tadek Marek's all-aluminium 3.7-litre (3,670 cc) twin-cam straight-six and a Touring of Milan "Superleggera" body of alloy panels over a tubular frame on a strong platform chassis.

With 240 bhp it could reach 140 mph and, famously, do 0-100-0 mph in around 27 seconds. Over five series and until 1963 the design was steadily refined, spawning the short-chassis DB4 GT and the Zagato, and directly previewing the DB5.

A total of 1,110 DB4s were built, including about 70 dropheads, establishing the template for the classic 1960s Aston grand tourer.
