STORY

The Audi 100 launched on 26 November 1968 as Audi's largest post-war car, its name originally denoting the roughly 100 PS output of its engine. It was the model that re-established Audi as a serious independent brand within the Volkswagen Group and spawned a long line of executive saloons.

The third-generation 100 (C3), launched in September 1982, became an aerodynamic milestone: with pin-mounted flush glazing, a smoothly tapered tail and careful underbody management, its smoothest version achieved a drag coefficient of just 0.30, a world record for a production saloon at the time. Marketed as the "aerodynamics world champion," it won the 1983 European Car of the Year and influenced a generation of car design. The 100 nameplate was eventually replaced by the Audi A6 in the 1990s.
