STORY
The ancestor of this line was the S2 of 1990, a 162 kW (220 PS) five-cylinder Coupe built as a partial replacement for the Ur-quattro. The first car badged S4 was the C4, built as a saloon and an Avant from August 1991 with a 2.2-litre turbo five of 169 kW (230 PS), later joined by a 4.2 V8. In 1994 that car was rebadged S6, so the S4 name went unused until September 1997, when it returned at Frankfurt on the B5 A4 with a 2.7-litre biturbo V6 of 195 kW (265 PS). The B6 shown in Paris in 2002 moved to a 4.2 V8 with 253 kW (344 PS), the B7 of 2004 kept it, the B8 of 2008 went to a supercharged 3.0 TFSI, and the B9, unveiled at Frankfurt in 2015, to a turbocharged 3.0 TFSI of 260 kW (354 PS). From 2019 European buyers got the S4 only as a 3.0 TDI with an electric powered compressor.
