The Story

Why the quattro Group 4 matters

The quattro rally car won the Jänner Rally in Austria on its debut in January 1981. In February Hannu Mikkola and Arne Hertz took its first world championship round win in Sweden, and in October Michèle Mouton and Fabrizia Pons won the San Remo Rally, the first victory for a female driving crew. Mikkola finished third in the 1981 drivers' standings. In 1982 Audi won the manufacturers' world title for the first time, with Mouton second and Mikkola third in the drivers' standings. The original competition version used a turbocharged inline five of about 304 PS (224 kW) and was based largely on the road car bodyshell; the later A1 and A2 evolutions reached around 355 PS.
