STORY
The Sport quattro S1 was the ultimate evolution of Audi's Group B rally programme, taking the short-wheelbase Sport Quattro to the extreme with radical aerodynamics and prodigious turbocharged power. When the FIA banned Group B after 1986, Audi channelled everything it had learned into a Pikes Peak assault.
In 1987 Walter Rohrl drove the Sport quattro S1 to victory at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, becoming the first competitor to break eleven minutes with a time of 10:48.850. The car officially produced around 600 PS, though Rohrl himself estimated closer to 750 PS, and used an anti-lag circulating-air system to keep the large KKK turbocharger spinning. Michele Mouton had won Pikes Peak for Audi in 1985 in a related car, and the S1 remains an icon of the quattro rally legend.
