STORY
First shown as a concept at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show and launched in production as a coupe in September 1998 (roadster in 1999), the Audi TT became an instant design icon. Styled at the Volkswagen Group Design Center in California by J Mays and Freeman Thomas, its Bauhaus-inspired form made the circle the central motif, with every line given a clear purpose.
Built on the Volkswagen Group A4 (PQ34) platform shared with the Golf Mk4 and first A3, the TT paired distinctive, near-production-faithful styling with turbocharged engines and available quattro drive. It proved that Audi could turn mainstream mechanicals into a genuinely desirable, design-led sports car, and across three generations the TT remained one of the most recognisable shapes on the road until production ended in 2023.
