STORY

The Audi V8 (Typ 4C, internally D11), built from 1988 to 1993, was Audi's first true luxury flagship and the first Audi to use a V8 engine. Based on the C3-generation 100/200 architecture, it was also the first Audi to combine the quattro all-wheel-drive system with an automatic transmission, initially with a 3.6-litre V8 and later a 4.2-litre unit.

Named simply after its engine (it had been intended as the "Audi 300"), the V8 pushed Audi upmarket toward Mercedes and BMW and served as the direct predecessor to the A8. Its competition version dominated the DTM, winning back-to-back drivers' titles in 1990 (Hans-Joachim Stuck) and 1991 (Frank Biela) and making Audi the first manufacturer to take consecutive DTM championships.
