The Beijing BJ40 (2013-) is BAIC's rugged body-on-frame off-roader, a boxy 4x4 inspired by the Jeep Wrangler and descended from the BJ212 military vehicle of the 1960s. It is durable and affordable, became the backbone of BAIC's 'Beijing' off-road line and is a growing export success.
The BAIC BJ40 is a rugged body-on-frame SUV between compact and midsize, styled as a boxy 4x4 inspired by the Jeep Wrangler. It is the core model of BAIC's off-road BJ line. It launched in 2013 and was updated through the BJ40 Plus and later BJ40 SE versions. It has a ladder-frame chassis, part-time four-wheel drive and available differential locks, and some versions have removable or convertible top parts. Power comes from turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engines, with plug-in hybrid options in later generations. It is an affordable hardcore off-roader for enthusiasts and competes with the Jeep Wrangler and domestic rivals like the Tank 300.
