The Beijing BJ80 (2016-) is BAIC's boxy luxury off-roader, a body-on-frame 4x4 openly inspired by the Mercedes G-Class, with a turbocharged engine. It is positioned as a cheaper alternative to the German original.
The BAIC BJ80 is a full-size, boxy luxury off-road SUV. Its upright shape and round headlamps clearly recall the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which reflects BAIC's long ties to Mercedes through the Beijing Benz joint venture. It is built on a ladder frame with four-wheel drive and several locking differentials. It launched around 2016 as a rugged flagship with a premium, retro-military look. It is usually powered by turbocharged gasoline engines, including a 2.3-liter and later larger units. It is a status off-roader, has been used in ceremonial and government roles, and sits at the top of BAIC's SUV lineup.
