STORY

The BMW 3.0 CSL turned the elegant E9 coupe into a track weapon and gave BMW Motorsport its first great icon. "CSL" stood for Coupe Sport Leichtbau (lightweight): thinner steel, aluminium panels and Perspex windows shed weight to homologate the car for European Touring Car racing in the early 1970s.

Its nickname, the "Batmobile," came from the dramatic aerodynamic package of a deep front air dam, roof and bootlid spoilers and a towering rear wing, shipped in the boot because such wings were not road-legal in Germany. On track it was devastating, winning the European Touring Car Championship repeatedly through the 1970s and cementing the reputation of BMW Motorsport, the division that would soon become BMW M.
