STORY
The BMW 320 Turbo was a Group 5 'silhouette' racing car built from 1977 on the E21 3 Series. It had a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The American IMSA cars ran a 2.0-litre version. In Germany's DRM the turbo engine was cut to 1.4 litres to fit the 2.0-litre class, and it still produced more than 400 PS. Teams such as McLaren North America raced it in IMSA, and it also competed in Germany's DRM. It showed what BMW's turbocharged four-cylinder technology could do. That development fed directly into BMW's turbocharged Formula 1 engine of the 1980s.
