STORY
The BMW M2 is the smallest, most compact M car, and to many enthusiasts the purest. Introduced in 2016 and now in its second (G87) generation, it channels the spirit of classics like the 2002 turbo and the 1M: a short-wheelbase rear-drive coupe with wide fenders and a big engine in a small body.
The current M2 borrows heavily from its bigger siblings, using a version of the twin-turbo S58 straight-six shared with the M3 and M4, and, crucially for purists, it remains available with a six-speed manual gearbox. Compact, playful and relatively attainable, the M2 has become one of BMW M's most popular models and the standard-bearer for old-school driving engagement in the range.
