The Group A BMW M3 was the homologation-bred racing version of the first-generation (E30) M3, built to contest touring-car championships from 1987. Powered by the four-cylinder S14 engine (2.3 then 2.5 litres) developing around 300 hp in race trim, it became one of the most successful touring cars in history, winning the 1987 World Touring Car Championship along with multiple European, German (DTM) and national titles into the early 1990s.
The E30 M3 was the original M3, a homologation special created specifically to win Group A touring car racing, with the high-revving S14 four-cylinder. It became the most successful touring car of its generation. It won the inaugural 1987 World Touring Car Championship with Roberto Ravaglia, plus DTM, European and national titles, and took repeated outright wins at the Spa and Nurburgring 24 Hours. The 2.5-litre Sport Evolution was the final and most powerful version.
