The E46 M3 GTR used a bespoke 4.0-litre V8 to win the 2001 ALMS GT title and the Nurburgring 24 Hours in 2004 and 2005. The homologation row forced a tiny run of road-legal cars.

STORY

The BMW M3 GTR was a purpose-built GT racing car based on the E46 M3, notable for replacing the road car's straight-six with a 4.0-litre P60B40 V8 producing around 444 hp. It won the 2001 American Le Mans Series GT class, but a rule requiring a road-legal production version led BMW into a homologation dispute that ended the car's career after only a handful of road-going M3 GTRs were built, making it one of the rarest and most coveted M cars.
