STORY

The BMW M8 finally delivered a production flagship that BMW had teased since the 1990s. When the original 8 Series was on sale, a high-performance M8 was built as a prototype but never sold; that car became a "secret" locked away for decades.

With the second-generation 8 Series, BMW made good on the promise. The M8, launched around 2019, pairs a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 (the S63) with M's xDrive all-wheel drive, offered as a coupe, convertible and four-door Gran Coupe. It sits at the very top of BMW M's road-car range as a genuine high-speed grand tourer, and its motorsport sibling, the M8 GTE, took BMW back to top-level endurance racing including Le Mans.
