STORY
The BMW X1 is the brand's smallest and most affordable SUV, sitting below the X3. The original 2009 E84 was unusual for its class, built on the rear-drive E90 3 Series platform with a longitudinal engine and available rear-wheel drive. From the second generation (F48, 2015) it switched to BMW's front-wheel-drive UKL/FAAR architecture shared with MINI and the 2 Series Active Tourer, trading dynamic purity for far greater space and efficiency. The current third-generation U11 (2022) offers petrol and diesel mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids and the fully electric iX1, making the X1 one of BMW's best-selling models worldwide.
