STORY
The BMW XM is a landmark for BMW M on two counts: it is only the second vehicle developed entirely in-house by the M division, the first since the M1 of 1978, and it is M's first purpose-built electrified model. Launched in 2022 as part of M's 50th-anniversary period, it is a large, deliberately extravagant plug-in hybrid super-SUV.
Its powertrain combines a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with an electric motor for a total of around 653 hp in the standard car, with an even more powerful Label Red version above it, plus the ability to run short distances on electric power alone. Polarising in its styling and unapologetically excessive, the XM signals how M intends to blend combustion muscle with electrification as it moves into the future.
