STORY

The Chery Amulet, code name A15, went into production in China in 2003 as the successor to the A11. Both cars grew out of the first-generation SEAT Toledo, but the sources disagree on how: one Russian outlet says Chery held a licence for the Toledo, an English-language site calls the Amulet a cosmetically altered copy, and a Finnish report says the A11 drawings reached Chery in unclear circumstances and the parties apparently settled out of court. The car reached Russia at the end of 2005 with a 1.6-litre engine of 94 hp, from about $11,000. Avtotor in Kaliningrad assembled it until March 2008, and one source dates the end of Chinese production to 2010, the year TagAZ in Taganrog began building the Vortex Corda.
