STORY

The Avalanche was shown as a concept at the 2000 Detroit auto show and went on sale in 2001 as a 2002 model. Its defining feature was the Midgate, a panel that opened the wall between cab and bed so the truck could carry longer loads. Sales peaked in 2003 at about 93,500 trucks, and later years were much quieter. General Motors ended the Avalanche with the 2013 model year, marked by a Black Diamond edition, after more than 580,000 had been sold since its introduction.
