The Chevette went on sale in the United States in 1975 as Chevrolet's 1976 subcompact. The 1976 base engine was a 1.4 L four rated at 52 hp, and the basic Scooter model was priced at $2,899 against $3,098 for the other versions. A 1.8 L Isuzu diesel rated 51 hp joined the range in late 1981. Production ended in December 1986, after 2,793,353 had been built across model years 1976 to 1987, and the last cars carried the 1987 model year.
The Chevette was a rear-drive subcompact sold from 1976 to 1987, offered mainly as a small hatchback. It was Chevrolet's affordable economy car during the fuel-conscious late 1970s.
