STORY

Chevrolet introduced the El Camino in the fall of 1958 as a 1959 model, built on the Brookwood two-door wagon as an answer to Ford's 1957 Ranchero. It built 22,246 in the first year against 14,169 Rancheros, then 14,163 in 1960, and was dropped. The name returned in 1964 on the Chevelle, with 32,548 built that year. A separate SS396 version appeared in 1968, and the LS6 454 of 1970 was rated at 450 hp. GMC sold a twin as the Sprint from 1971 and as the Caballero from 1978. The 1978 redesign brought 54,286 built, and the El Camino ended with the 1987 model year.
