STORY

Chevrolet introduced the Monte Carlo as a 1970 model, with the first cars on sale and tested by the press in autumn 1969, and it sold more than 145,000 cars in that first year. The SS 454 package carried the LS5 big block, rated at 360 hp and 500 lb-ft for 1970 and at 365 hp for 1971, both SAE gross figures. From 1972 American ratings switched to SAE net, so the figures of the first two years cannot be compared directly with those of later cars.
