In November 2010 the EPA rated the first Chevrolet Volt, sold as a 2011 model, at 93 MPGe on electric power and 37 mpg once the gasoline engine takes over. The second generation came for 2016. In August 2015 the EPA rated its battery-only range at 53 miles, about 40 percent more than the 38 miles of the final 2013 to 2015 rating of the previous generation, and the lithium-ion pack was listed at 18.4 kWh. These are EPA test-cycle figures, so range in daily use varies with weather, speed and how the car is driven.
The Volt was a plug-in hybrid built from 2011 to 2019 that could drive on electric power before a gasoline engine acted as a generator. It was one of the first mass-market extended-range electric cars.
