STORY

Launched in 1986 as Citroën's supermini, the AX replaced the ageing Visa and used clever lightweight engineering to achieve very low weight and class-leading fuel economy. Its TU-series petrol and small diesel engines made it a frugal, nimble city car, while the sporty GT and GTi versions were true hot hatches. It was sold until 1998, when it was effectively succeeded by the Saxo.
