The XM replaced the CX as Citroën's flagship in 1989 and won the 1990 European Car of the Year. It had sharp Bertone styling and the Hydractive computer-controlled hydropneumatic suspension. It came as a hatchback and an estate with petrol V6 and turbodiesel engines. It aimed at executive-class rivals but had early electrical reliability problems. Production ended in 2000, and the C6 took over the flagship role in 2005.
