The GS was launched in 1970 to fill the gap between the 2CV/Ami and the DS. It won the 1971 European Car of the Year with its aerodynamic fastback body, air-cooled flat-four engine and hydropneumatic suspension. A few cars used a Wankel rotary engine (GS Birotor), but only 847 were built. The GS was facelifted into the GSA in 1979, with a hatchback and a revised dashboard. The family sold over 2.5 million before ending in 1986.
