STORY

The Traction Avant, launched in 1934, popularised front-wheel drive combined with a unitary monocoque body and independent torsion-bar suspension. It was advanced and low-slung for its time and had a reputation for good roadholding. It was well known as a car of the French police and the Resistance. Over 760,000 were built as saloons, cabriolets and long limousines before production ended in 1957. The DS succeeded it.
