The first Denza, sold from 2014 and later as the Denza 400 and 500, was the original electric car of the BYD-Daimler joint venture, a saloon-hatchback. It was built on a stretched Mercedes-Benz B-Class platform with a BYD electric powertrain. Sales stayed slow throughout the first Denza period. This led BYD to take majority control and relaunch the brand with the D9.
