The X was shown at the 2019 Guangzhou auto show and launched there on the Mercedes-Benz stand. Sales stayed small and the car was dropped at the end of 2021 as Denza was restructured under BYD. The three-row SUV role was taken over in 2023 by the Denza N8, a reworked version of the same car.
The Denza X is a seven-seat mid-size SUV, the first Denza built on a BYD platform rather than a Mercedes-Benz one. It shares its structure and drivetrain hardware with the BYD Tang, with exterior and interior design led by Mercedes-Benz designers. It was sold in China only, as a pure electric model and as a plug-in hybrid. It is a different car from the earlier Denza 400/500 sedan, now listed as the Denza EV.
