STORY
Dodge launched the Diplomat in 1977 as its own model line on Chrysler's rear-drive M platform, shared with the Chrysler LeBaron. Almost every car came with the 318-cubic-inch V8, rated at roughly 145 hp in the first years. Coupes were dropped after 1981, leaving the four-door sedan, and police and taxi fleets became its steady customers. The 1989 model was the last, with the 318 down to 140 hp and a three-speed automatic. Consumer Guide calls it the last rear-drive Chrysler passenger car for a generation.
