Neon

1995 – 2005

The Dodge Neon was a compact car built from 1995 to 2005, with cheerful styling and lively handling. The high-performance SRT-4 arrived in 2003 with a turbocharged engine and held its own against bigger rivals among sport compacts. Early on, the Neon was sold under both the Dodge and Plymouth badges.

The Story

Why the Neon matters

The Neon began as a 1991 concept and went on sale in 1994 as Chrysler's new small car. It launched at $9,457, per Car and Driver, which was $850 below the cheapest four-door Saturn. The 2.0-liter SOHC four made 132 hp. The ACR race package was offered from the first Neon sales in 1994 to licensed SCCA racers only, fewer than 200 cars, before opening to everyone in 1995. A larger second generation came for 2000, the SRT-4 followed with 215 hp at launch, and production ended on September 23, 2005.
