STORY

Fiat introduced the 126 at the Turin show in October 1972 as the replacement for the 500, with a rear-mounted 594 cc twin rated at 23 PS. The first Polish-built car came off the line at Bielsko-Biala on 6 June 1973 under licence as the Polski Fiat 126p, and Poland went on to build 3,318,674 of them against 1,352,912 made in Italy. The last 126 was built in Poland on 22 September 2000, so most of the model's life was Polish rather than Italian.
