STORY

Fiat presented the 127 in 1971 as a front-wheel-drive successor to the 850, and it won European Car of the Year for 1972 with 239 points, ahead of the Renault 15/17. The launch engine was a 903 cc four derived from the 850 Sport, rated at 47 PS. A three-door hatchback joined the saloon in 1972, and Fiat counted its millionth 127 in 1974. Licence builds such as SEAT in Spain and Zastava in Yugoslavia are counted in the overall 127 and 147 total of nearly five million.
