The Story

Why the 131 matters

Fiat brought out the 131 Mirafiori in October 1974 as the successor to the 124, as a two- or four-door saloon. In 1978 the 1.3 and 1.6 litre petrol engines of the Supermirafiori switched to twin overhead camshafts. Abarth and Bertone built about 400 two-door 131 Abarth Rally cars for homologation, with 140 PS in road trim, and the works cars won the manufacturers' world rally title in 1977, 1978 and 1980. The Regata replaced it from September 1983. SEAT in Spain and Tofas in Turkey built it under licence as the SEAT 131 and Tofas Murat 131.
