500

2007 – present

The Fiat 500 is a compact city car. Its modern version launched in 2007 as a retro version of the well-loved Nuova 500 of the 1950s. Its small size, cheerful design and many personalization options made it fashionable and a strong seller in Europe and beyond. High-performance Abarth versions added turbocharged engines and a sharper exhaust sound.

The Story

Why the 500 matters

The Fiat 500 name began with the tiny rear-engined Nuova 500 of 1957, an air-cooled two-cylinder city car that put post-war Italy on wheels and became a world-famous piece of design. In 2007 Fiat revived the name with a front-engined, front-wheel-drive retro hatchback whose styling echoed the original. It became fashionable and sold well across Europe and North America. The modern 500 grew into a broad family: the 500C convertible, the Abarth hot hatches, and the separate 500L and 500X models.
