STORY
The Punto replaced the Uno. Fiat showed the first generation, project 176, to the press at the Lingotto in Turin on 31 August 1993 and to the public at the Frankfurt show on 7 September, with production starting that October. Giorgetto Giugiaro designed it, and it was built at Melfi, Mirafiori and Termini Imerese among other plants. It won European Car of the Year for 1995, beating the Volkswagen Polo by 370 points to 292. The second generation followed in 1999 with a new torsion-beam rear axle and was facelifted in 2003. Later cars carried the Grande Punto name from 2005 and the Punto Evo from 2009, which are separate models.
