STORY

Fiat presented the Uno in January 1983 at Cape Canaveral in Florida, with a tall, boxy body from Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign. It was European Car of the Year for 1984, ahead of the Peugeot 205. Petrol engines at launch ran from 45 to about 70 PS, with a 45 PS diesel following within months. The Uno Turbo i.e. came in 1985 with a 1.3 turbo of 105 PS, and the 1989 update shown at Frankfurt was followed by a 1.4-litre Turbo i.e. rated up to 118 PS (less with a catalyst). Italian production ended in 1995 as the Punto took over, though the Uno continued in Brazil. About 6.3 million were built in Italy and 8.8 million in all, though some counts give over 9.5 million without stating the scope.
