STORY

The X1/9 was a mid-engined two-seater drawn by Bertone under Marcello Gandini and launched by Fiat in late 1972. It used the 1,290 cc engine of the 128 coupe, rated 75 hp, with a four-speed gearbox. A 1,498 cc engine of 85 hp and a five-speed gearbox replaced it in 1978, though the change is sometimes dated to 1979. Fiat handed production to Bertone in 1982 and the cars carried Bertone badges from then on. The line ended in 1989 with the Gran Finale edition, and counts of the total built range from 166,000 to more than 170,000.
