STORY

The Aerostar was Ford's first purpose-built minivan, launched for 1986 to compete with Chrysler's segment-defining vans. Unusually, it used a rear-wheel-drive (later optional all-wheel-drive) layout on a truck-like platform, giving it strong towing and cargo ability that appealed to buyers who needed more than a car-based van. It sold alongside the newer front-drive Windstar for several years before production ended in 1997.
