STORY

Ford used the Consul name on three successive cars of its own. The first, shown at the 1950 Earls Court motor show and built from 1951 to 1956, had a 1,508 cc overhead-valve four rated at 47 bhp. The Mk 2 followed in 1956 with a 1,703 cc engine and 59 bhp, and in 1961 it became the Consul 375 to separate it from the unrelated Consul Classic. In 1972 the name returned on the cheaper versions of the new Granada, which used a 2.0-litre V4 or a 2.5-litre V6, with a 3.0-litre V6 reserved for the Consul GT. Ford dropped the Consul name in 1975 and every car became a Granada.
