STORY

Ford says the Escape went into production at Kansas City Assembly in 2000, as a unibody compact SUV developed alongside the Mazda Tribute. The Escape Hybrid arrived in 2005, and Ford describes it as the world's first hybrid SUV; more than 100,000 were sold before it was dropped in 2012, and it returned for the 2020 model year. Production moved to Louisville Assembly in 2012, and a fourth generation followed in 2019. The last Escape was built there on 17 December 2025, and Ford had sold more than 4.5 million in North America by mid-2025.
