STORY

Ford built the GT40 after talks to buy Ferrari collapsed in the early 1960s; the name refers to a height of about 40 inches. Production ran from 1964 to 1969 and totalled about 105 cars. At Le Mans in 1966 Ford's Mk II cars with 7.0 L V8 engines finished first, second and third. In 1967 the Mk IV of Dan Gurney and A. J. Foyt won, the only all-American Le Mans victory. A Mk I won in 1968 and again in 1969, giving the GT40 four straight wins from 1966.
