STORY

The GT500 began in 1967 as Ford's big-block Shelby Mustang. In 1968 the GT500KR, for King of the Road, took the 428 Cobra Jet, rated at 335 hp gross. The 2007 car had a 5.4-litre supercharged V8 rated at 500 hp, then the most powerful production Mustang. For 2013 Ford moved to an aluminium 5.8-litre supercharged V8 rated at 662 hp. The S550 car followed for 2020: Ford announced its 5.2-litre supercharged V8 in June 2019 at 760 hp and 625 lb-ft on premium fuel, and called it the most powerful street-legal Ford ever.
