STORY

The Ford Pinto went on sale on September 11, 1970 as a 1971 model, a subcompact built to take on imports and the Chevrolet Vega, with a 1.6-litre Kent four as the base engine. Production was 352,402 in 1971 and peaked at 544,209 in 1974. The car is remembered for fuel-tank fires that brought lawsuits and a federal investigation, with an official count of 27 deaths to mid-1977. Ford ended it after the 1980 model year with more than three million built, and the front-drive Escort took its place for 1981.
