STORY

The Probe began as ST-16, a front-drive, Mazda-based proposal for the next Mustang, which Autoweek revealed on April 13, 1987. Fan backlash arrived too late to stop the car, and it reached showrooms as the Probe, a 1989 model built at Flat Rock, Michigan, on the platform shared with the Mazda 626 and MX-6. The 1989 base car used a 2.2-litre four rated at 110 hp (US rating). A redesigned second generation followed for 1993 with a 2.5-litre V6 rated at 164 hp (US rating), and the Probe ended with the 1997 model year. Ford then handed the planned successor to Mercury, where it became the Cougar of 1999.
